Diabetic Shoes & Inserts
At Capital Prosthetic & Orthotic Center, we provide diabetic shoes and custom inserts to help protect your feet, reduce pressure, and prevent complications related to diabetes. Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover diabetic footwear when specific medical documentation requirements are met.
Before scheduling an appointment, please review and complete the following steps.
Required Documentation & Appointment Guidelines
Step 1: Obtain a Prescription
You must have a prescription for diabetic shoes and inserts from your physician before scheduling.
When calling our office, we will ask:
- Do you have a prescription for diabetic shoes?
- Which physician wrote the prescription?
**If you do not yet have a prescription, please contact your physician and request one before calling us.
Step 2: Diabetic Foot Exam
The physician who wrote the prescription must have performed a diabetic foot exam during an office visit.
This exam documents qualifying foot conditions required for insurance coverage, such as:
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Amputation
- Foot deformities
- History of ulcers
- Calluses that could lead to ulcers
- Poor circulation (must have pedal pulse or monofilament testing performed and documented)
**If a foot exam was not performed, you will need to schedule an appointment with your physician to have this completed before calling us.
Step 3: Appointment Timeframe
Your diabetic foot exam must be recent:
If your exam was within the last 4 months, we can schedule your appointment.
- If your exam was more than 4 months ago, you will need to see your physician again for an updated visit before scheduling your fitting.
Step 4: Diabetes Managing Physician
Insurance requires that the physician managing your diabetes be an MD (Medical Doctor) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine).
- If you usually see a CNP (Certified Nurse Practitioner) or another mid-level provider for your diabetes care, you must still have seen an MD or DO within the same practice at some point to meet insurance requirements.
- During your call, we will ask who manages your diabetes to ensure the proper documentation is on file.
**If your MD or DO visit is current and all documentation is complete, we can schedule your diabetic shoe appointment up to 30 days in advance.
**Please note: If the physician who manages your diabetes is also your
primary care physician, they can provide a prescription
as long as they have performed a diabetic foot exam within the last 4 months.
Reminder: this physician must be an MD or DO.**
